BIOGRAPHY OF SHAKIH MUHAMMAD KAMALDEEN HABEEBULLAH AL-ADABY




DR. SHAYKH MUHAMMAD KAMALUD-DEEN HABEEBULLAH AL-ADABY.

His Eminence Dr. Shaykh Muhammad Kamalud-deen Habeebullah Al-Adaby was born into the family of Mallam Habeebullah Musa in 1905. He began his Qur'anic Education at early age in Ile Babaita, Alore, Ilorin under respected Mallams Ahmad Tijani and Late Salahud-deen and graduated in 1919. He later proceeded to the school of the popular Shaykh Mahammad Jamiu Alabi Tajul-Adab at Ile Imam Imale, Masingba- Omoda, Ilorin, in the same year. He was the most hard-working and the most beloved of the pupils of Shaykh Tajul-Adab who gave him his first title "Kamalud-deen". He remained a pupil of his teacher just for a period of three years when the latter died. He began public lecture under the tutelage of his master Shaykh Tajul-Adab. His first place of public lecture was at Ihumbo in the Republic of Benin. His master Shaykh Tajul- Adab died in 1922. The sage continued to build on the work of his master by teaching and propagating Islamic doctrines through public lectures. He established his first Az- Zumratul Al-Adabiyyah Arabic and Islamiyyah School in Lagos in 1928. The Ilorin Branch of the School was established in 1930. He founded Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria and abroad on 28th May, 1942 which was the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria. He established the first primary school of the society in Ilorin in 1947. At present, there are over two hundred of such schools spread across Nigeria and some neighboring West African countries like Republic of Benin, Togo and Ghana. There are also over two hundred branches of the Ansarul Islam Society in Nigeria. The first Secondary School of the Society was established at Ijomu-Oro in 1970, closely followed by that of Ilorin in 1971. Today, Ansarul Islam Society has about seventeen Secondary Schools in Nigeria. Shaykh Kamalud-deen's visit to Cairo, Egyptin 1962 yielded the establishment of Al-Azhary Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies (Al- Mahd Al-Azhary) in Ilorin 1963. To cap his efforts in providing Higher Education in Nigeria, the first phase of the Society's university was launched in ilorin on 19th January, 2003. Work has reached advanced stage in the construction of buildings that will serve the University for Academic and Administrative purposes at its permanent site, Ogidi, Ilorin. Shaykh Kamalud-deen was the Chairman of Ilorin Central Mosque Management Committee that successfully oversees the construction of the new Ilorin Central Juma'at Mosque that was officially commissioned by PresidentShehu Shagari in 1981. Awards The sage received awards and honours from within and abroad in recognition of his "distinguished international Islamic contributions to the development of scholarship and ... advancement of mankind". Firstly, he got MFR (1963), OFR (1981) from the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Kwara State Merit Award (1988), ORSA (1992) award from the Egyptian Government and D. Litt. (1998) from University of Ilorin. Similarly, the Nigeria Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies (NATAIS) awarded the Shaykh a "Fellowship in Islamic Studies, Nigeria" (FISN) in 2002 in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the service of Islam. Now, HRH, the Emir of Ilorin, Mai Martaba (Alhaji) (Dr.) Ibrahim Sulu Karnaini Gambari awarded the genius the first Grand Mufti of Ilorin (2005). This is the highest award any Emir of Ilorin ever bestowed on any Islamic scholar in the Emirate. No doubt, this is a merited award. May Allah's accept all his contributions towards Islamic propagation and service to humanity and grand him Aljanat firidaus Amin
